HistoryMiami Presents Ghost Tours Of Miami City Cemetery

In honor of Halloween, HistoryMiami's City Tours is hosting ghoulish Miami City Cemetery tours. There are two nighttime tours; on Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29 from 8pm-10pm. For those faint-of-heart, the daylight walk is on Saturday, October 29 from 10am-noon.

Many prominent figures are buried at Miami’s City Cemetery, including settler Julia Tuttle, known by many as "the mother of Miami," and business pioneers like the Burdine family. It was created in 1887, making it the first and oldest cemetery in Miami. Visitors can appreciate the rare tropical plants and trees here, as well as, admire the Mediterranean Revival architecture, and the historic styles of the tombstones and mausoleums.

These Ghost Tours offer a unique opportunity to learn more about Miami’s fascinating past through the cemetery’s inhabitants. Featuring historian Dr. Paul George and other HistoryMiami guides, tourgoers will hear some of the tragic and bizarre stories of those entombed at City Cemetery, for example, the story of the “Lady in Concrete,” a woman buried in concrete by her loving husband who chose this method to preserve her body for eternity.

To book these City Tours or for information please call 305-375-1621, e-mail citytours@historymiami.org, or visit the City Tours website.

Mötley Crüe’s Summer Tour 2011 w/ Poison & the New York Dolls Stops at Hard Rock Live on July 5

Mötley Crüe

Mötley Crüe, one of the world’s most iconic rock bands, will bring their summer headlining tour 2011 with support from Poison and special guests New York Dolls to Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on July 5 at 7 p.m.  Ticket are on sale now.

Tickets cost $104 (General Admission, Standing Room Only) and $104 (Reserved Seats)*; all seats are available at the Hard Rock Live Box Office, Tuesday-Saturday, noon-6p.m. and Sunday-Monday only open on event days at noon. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets online at www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. Doors open one-hour prior to show start time. *Additional fees may apply.

As one of the first and most influential hair metal bands of the '80s, Mötley Crüe has sold over 80 million albums worldwide and has inspired both fans and rock and roll and bands alike over their two-plus decades career.  Their mixture of heavy metal and glam rock-stylings produced several best-selling albums that showcased their love of motorcycles, whiskey and strip clubs, as well as telling tales of substance abuse, sexual escapades and general decadence.

Bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee formed Mötley Crüe in 1981 with guitarist Mick Mars and vocalist Vince Neil. The band toured the local Los Angeles club scene and soon became cult favorites known for their unique stage theatrics.

Their first album, Too Fast for Love, sold a surprising 20,000 copies and spawned the cult single and fan favorites “Live Wire” and the title track (the album was later remixed and re-released). In 1983, the band released Shout at the Devil which featured the hit video "Looks That Kill" as well as “Too Young to Fall in Love” and the title track. Theatre of Pain produced their first Top 40 hit with a cover of Brownsville Station's "Smokin' in the Boys' Room." "Home Sweet Home;" the first hit power ballad to be aired on MTV became their most requested music video for four months straight. A home video, Uncensored, was released in 1986, containing rare live footage and interviews.  A year later, Mötley Crüe released their fourth album, Girls, Girls, Girls that included an uncensored video for the popular title track that was immediately banned from television. In 1989, Dr. Feelgood hit #1 on the Billboard charts due to the strong singles "Kickstart My Heart," "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)," "Without You," and the title-track, which became their first Top Ten single. A compilation album, Decade of Decadence, was released in 1991 and opened at #2 on the charts. Other albums to follow included Generation Swine (1997), New Tattoo (2000), the band's double-disc greatest hits collection, Red, White & Crüe (2005) and Saints of Los Angeles (2008).
Bret Michaels of Poison

Fellow American glam rockers Poison have sold over 30 million records worldwide and had seven Top 10 singles and the Hot 100 #1 single, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

Formerly known as Paris, Poison was formed in 1984. In 1986, they released their first album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, that spawned a pair of Top 40 hits, "Talk Dirty to Me" and "I Won't Forget You," and sold over two-million copies within a year of its release. Open Up & Say...Ahhh! (1998) proved to be Poison's commercial breakthrough due to the massive hits "Fallen Angel," "Nothin' But a Good Time" and the afore-mentioned “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”  The album Flesh and Blood (1990) included the #3 hit "Unskinny Bop" and the #4 ballad "Something to Believe In." In 2006, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary with a national tour and greatest-hits album. Propelled by Michaels' new status as a reality TV star, The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock debuted inside the Billboard Top 20. The following year brought similar luck with the band's seventh studio effort -- a covers album titled Poison'd!
The New York Dolls

Rock innovators the New York Dolls formed in 1971. As predecessors of the punk rock era, their outrageous sound and style influenced the look of many new wave and glam metal groups. They began the local New York scene that later spawned The Ramones, Blondie, Television and Talking Heads. The band's first two albums remain among the most popular cult records in rock ‘n’ roll history.

During the early ‘70s, the group played regularly in Lower Manhattan, particularly at the Mercer Arts Center. Within a few months, they had earned a dedicated cult following, but record companies were afraid of signing the Dolls because of their cross-dressing and blatant vulgarity. The band’s eponymous 1973 debut was produced by sophisticated popster Todd Rundgren. Despite critical reviews, the album failed to catch on. The follow-up, Too Much Too Soon, produced by the legendary girl group producer George "Shadow" Morton, was relegated to the same fate. Britain’s Malcolm McLaren, who would later become famous for managing the Sex Pistols, became the Dolls’ manager and while his shock and publicity tactics later worked for the Sex Pistols, they further alienated the Dolls’ rapport with the public. Though the band broke up in 1977, over the next two decades, various outtakes collections, live albums, and compilations were released by a variety of labels and the New York Dolls' two original studio albums never went out of print.

Ironically, David Johansen began a solo career that would eventually metamorphose into his lounge-singing alter ego, Buster Poindexter. He scored a huge hit with the kitschy hybrid of soul and tropical pop remix of “Hot, Hot, Hot” in the mid-'80s.

In 2004, former Smiths vocalist Morrissey -- who was once the president of a British New York Dolls fan club -- invited the surviving members of the New York Dolls to perform at the 2004 Meltown Festival. The group's set was well received by critics and fans (and was recorded for release on DVD and compact disc). Numerous appearances followed including a hometown tribute to their fallen brothers at Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival in New York City.

The New York Dolls fifth studio album, Dancing Backward in High Heels, featuring both original members Johansen and Sylvain, was released earlier this year.

Wynwood Art District Vespa Tours Presented by Roam Rides

Sure, South Beach has a lot going on - bars, clubs, restaurants, shopping, and, of course, sun, sand, and surf. But there is a whole other side of Miami, waiting to be discovered just 15 minutes away. Hop on a Vespas and explore the pulsing heart of the Miami art scene in the Wynwood Art District. Miami-based Roam Rides offers three tours, each focusing on different aspects of this growing neighborhood. Come share our excitement and get to know a different Miami!

The Street Art Tour, developed exclusively for us by street.art.cycles, the creators of the original bicycle graffiti tour, takes riders across the Venetian Causeway and winds up through Wynwood and the Design District. Many stops along the way focus on both local and internationally known artists who have created some stunning work on both public and private properties. An in-depth and fascinating exploration of the artists and crews, and the rules by which they respect tags, bombs, throw-ups and pieces, this tour is unlike anything you've seen in Miami before.

The Gallery Tour features select galleries in Wynwood that showcase the diversity and depth of the exploding art scene in Miami. From more traditional galleries featuring well-known artists to galleries that focus on artists from a particular cultural backgroud to avant garde galleries promoting emerging artists, the tour gives riders a great cross-section of what is going on in the Wynwood Arts District.

The Collections Tour features an in-depth visit to one of the major Collection houses in Wynwood, either the Rubell Collection or the Margulies Collection. These are both very large spaces-45,000 sq. ft.-that house huge collections of paintings, sculptures, photos, video, and installations. More like museums than galleries, these locations offer a tour of the collection led by a docent.

All tours finish up with brunch/lunch at Morgan's. Morgan's is a spectacular restaurant on 29th Street in Wynwood, featuring classic American fare prepared beautifully. They call themselves "Miami's Modern Home-Style Comfort Food." Morgan's has created a fixed menu for those wrapping up their tour. The cost of lunch plus gratuity is included in the tour.

All tours included any entrance fees, tolls both ways, and lunch including gratuity, and the cost is per person. It does not include the scooter rental. We are offering a discounted rate for riders who only want the scooter for the duration of the tour, $25 per scooter. For riders who want to keep the scooter beyond the tour, regular rates apply:
- Street Art Tour: $55/person
- Gallery Tour: $55/person
- Collections Tour: $65/person

Tours operates on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Street Art Only on Sunday). The tours begin at 11am, and depart from Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, which is located at the intersection of Purdy Ave. and the Venetian Causeway. Rriders should arrive at 10:30 to check everyone in and make sure they are all comfortable on their Vespas. Tour will last 3-3.5 hours, including brunch/lunch.

The tours will take riders across the Venetian Causeway and up into Wynwood and the Design District, avoiding busy roads and bad neighborhoods.
