Miami Beach Botanical Garden Hosts FREE Performing Arts Events

Miami Performance and Visual Art Festival - July 26-29

The first of its kind, this free festival will offer workshops, artist's talks, performances and parties for four days. Presented by Edge-Zones, a non-profit arts organization, live performances will be presented to the public in a participatory discourse during the four-day program. This intensive contemporary arts event will take place at three different sites: Downtown Miami, the Miami Design District, and the Botanical Gardens. 

This innovative program will explore the breaking down of boundaries between visual art, music, dance and poetry. A dynamic dialogue between time-based art practice and its documentation will occur through a comprehensive exhibition of site-reactive installations. 

At 9:30 a.m. on the 26th, the festival will start with a meet-and-greet here at the garden, with artist's talks and lunch to follow until noon. Come to the garden to pick up a schedule of events, and visit the event website here.

On the 29th, performances, installations, and discussions at the garden will start at 9:20 a.m., with a free children's workshop at 10 a.m. Events continue until 8 p.m., where you can join the party with DJ Action Pat at 150 NE 40th Street, a pop-up performance space in Miami. 

Shakespeare Under the Sun - August 4 and 11, 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily

The garden is hosting three outdoor plays produced by Arturo Fernandez of Ground Up & Rising. The first performance will be Julius Caesar, with two shows at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  This is an hour-long, modern adaption of the Shakespearian classic. Ground Up & Rising is an award-winning,  non-profit theater organization with a vision "to replace the safe and already treaded with the avant-garde and risque." 

The producer, Arturo Fernandez, has been named as one of the Top 20 Artists Under 40 by the Miami New Times, and was given the 2010 Theater Visionary Award by the Miami ArtZine, amongst other accolades. Read more about Fernadez's performances and accomplishments here!

Before the summer fun begins, the city of Coconut Grove invites visitors to enjoy a night out with international art, hors d’oeuvres, friends and family. The Grove Gallery Walk, an event that takes place the first Saturday of each month, will continue with the May 5 event. 

The Grove Gallery Walk begins at 7pm and continues through 10pm. It is FREE and open to the public. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be made available at selected galleries, while live music at some locations.

This month RODEZArt.com Gallery (3015 Grand Avenue, Suite 237) will host the 24th annual exhibition by the National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI), an organization dedicated to collecting, displaying and selling art by persons in recovery from mental illness. The exhibition features the works of artists from Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Spain and the United States. All 40 artworks featured in the exhibition will be available for sale with the proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goals of helping artists from around the world.

Cristina Chacon Gallery (3162 Commodore Plaza, Suite 1f2) will feature artist Alberto González Vivo’s exhibit titled “Formas/Shapes.” His work ranges from geometric abstraction to Op art, influenced by his research on the production of artists Luis Tomasello, Julio Le Parc, Victor Vasarely, Martha Boto and Eduardo Moisset de Espanés, a generative geometry artist and creator of the Centre for Plastic Mathematical Research of Argentina. The artist’s use of light combined with geometric shapes and smart colors adds balance to his work creating effects of great magnetism.


May’s featured artist for FrameWorks Gallery (3196 Commodore Plaza) is fine art photographer Paul Marcellini. His photos capture the unspoiled scenes of wild Florida with breathtaking views of the Everglades. Through the end of May, Marcellini’s work will also be on display at the Everglades National Park Visitor’s Center.  In the past, he has been featured at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, The Winter Park Side Walk Festival, The Santa Fe College Arts Festival and The Islamorada Fine Art Expo. 


At Boswell Mourot Fine Art (3162 Commodore Plaza), May’s exhibit will feature all of the current gallery’s artists. Boswell Mourot is solely a fine art gallery, selling original paintings, mixed media and sculptures by international, national and local artists for the established and emerging collector. Artists include Hans Feyerbend, Karen Deilke, John Allison and Diana Ashley.


The Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery (339 Mayfair Street, Suite 128) Meme Ferre will showcase her paintings for another month in her exhibition titled “Raw Energy / Energía Cruda.” Ferre’s pieces combine colors of the Caribbean and the iconic mysticism of India. She will also conduct a live program titled “Art Attack” during the opening, where she will paint to music.


The Jim Hunter Gallery (3390 Mary St. Suite 128) right next door will continue to feature Erika King’s retrospective collage collection, titled “Evolution of Spirit.” This exhibition displays iconic images of the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Statue of Liberty, Native Americans, angels and even Marilyn Monroe, through the use of familiar fragments of sheet music, stamps and torn foreign currency.


Art-inspired events such as these are provided by partnering galleries and the Coconut Grove BID. The Coconut Grove BID exists to improve the quality and financial success of the Grove’s commercial core. It enhances Grove parking, lighting, sanitation, marketing, and safety, as well as supporting special events.

Peace Palooza 2011: A Celebration of Love and Oneness at Tobacco Road

The Peace Palooza 2011 installment of this annual event will emphasize music by performers that made significant contributions in the 1960s; from Rock 'n' Roll, Soul, Pop, Reggae, Blues and other genres of music. There will be two stages of music and something for everyone to enjoy!

Proceeds from this event will be donated to a local nonprofit organization with a mission that promotes nonviolent action and seeks to reduce the use of violence worldwide.

Don't Miss the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk This Saturday, Dec. 17

Enjoy strolling the quaint, tree-lined sidewalks of historic Downtown Hollywood while being serenaded by the sounds of a jazz saxophone, or the soft strings of a violin or harp. Take a moment to look over the shoulder of an artist painting and visit the art galleries and businesses showcasing local, regional and international artwork.


The ArtWalk takes place the third Saturday of every month, from 7pm-10pm. Please park in one of the Municipal Garages from 6am-10pm. The first two hours are FREE, and the cost is $1 per hour thereafter. New, Interactive Art Installation At Miami International Airport By Artist Christoper Janney

Harmonic Convergence, the newest, large-scale art installation by artist, architect and composer Christopher Janney, is nearing completion at the Miami International Airport. Janney terms Harmonic Convergence “an abstraction of South Florida in color and sound.”

The official dedication of Harmonic Convergence, hosted by Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places, will take place in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami 2011, held Dec. 1-4. Art Basel Miami Beach is the largest art fair in the U.S.

Harmonic Convergence features a 72-foot-long window wall with diamond-shaped panes of colored glass in front of a white structural steel “X-Bracing” frame. With a palette of over 150 transparent colors, Janney has created a gradually changing pattern ranging from deep reds to bright violets, similar to a rainbow.

The project is part of Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program and is located in the passenger connector walkway that is the entrance into the airport from the new the “MIA Mover” automated transit system.

As travelers enter the space, they will hear a complex set of sounds Janney recorded during trips to the Florida Everglades, scuba dives in the ocean, and other natural environments of South Florida. In addition, two video cameras installed in the ceiling feed information to the computer regarding the pedestrian activity within the space, influencing the density of the sound-score. At the top of each hour, a short composition with percussion instruments plays, marking the time of day.

“This is my fifth project in South Florida,” Janney states. “It is one of my favorite places in the world. I love the sounds of the subtropics most particularly the Everglades, the ocean shore and underwater sounds, especially sounds both real, as in whales and porpoises, and imagined, i.e. mermaids and Atlantis."

Harmonic Convergence is a replacement for Janney’s 1997 airport commission Harmonic Runway, which was removed from Concourse A after changes to the airport occurred due to 9/11 security. That former artwork had become an icon of South Florida, featured in numerous magazines and on film including the Harrison Ford feature, “Random Hearts” and the Nicholas Cage film, “8MM.”

Trained as an architect and jazz musician, Janney is an American artist whose work explores the relationships between sound and architecture, often-transforming otherwise ordinary spaces into “hyper-reality” environments.

Educated at Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Janney has explored the intersection of architecture and music for more than 30 years, creating temporary and permanent installations throughout the U.S. and Europe.

MoCA Art Institute Offers New Art Program For 3-5 Year Olds on the Second Thursday of Every Month

Stories and imagination come alive with the MoCA Art Institute’s new program for preschoolers ages 3-5 and their parents or caregivers.

In Start Together, young children will create art projects inspired by favorite children’s books, as a way to learn the basics of color and design, develop fine motor skills and encourage a love of reading.

Start Together will be held monthly from through May 2012, on the second Thursday of the month from 10am-11am. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

For kids of all ages who have ever had a bad day: Actors’ Playhouse presents "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day"

Back by popular demand to kick off the 2011-2012 Actors' Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences Season is "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." The play is based on the award-winning children's book of the same name, and adapted for the stage by the book's author, Judith Viorst, into this marvelous musical that is wacky, wild and wonderfully wise.

Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair and he is right. Things only get worse as the day goes on: his best friend bails on him, there's no dessert in his lunch bag, there's lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV! The only reasonable response is to move to Australia.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, with book and lyrics by Judith Viorst and music by Shelly Markham, will play at the Miracle Theatre from September 30 through November 19, 2011. Performances are Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Coconut Grove Gives Artists a Fighting Chance: Grove Gallery Walk Features Sports, Pastimes and the Individual on August 6

In the thrilling words of Michael Buffer: South Florida, “Let's get ready to rumble.” This month’s First Saturday Coconut Grove Art Gallery Walk features a lineup of artists that are sure to knock you out. 

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, 10 galleries will host a night of art, wine, fun and excitement. The Grove Gallery Walk continues through 10 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be made available at participating galleries, while live music can be found at some locations.

Round 1 begins at AC Fine Arts, located at Mayfair, where it will host a solo exhibition by artist and renowned corner man of Mohammad Ali, Ferdie Pacheco, aka “The Fight Doctor.” Hosting an exhibition of original oil paintings by the same name, this once boxing analyst and physician showcases his imaginative use of color alongside abstract conceptions. Also featured in the exhibition are original photos taken by Pacheco’s wife during his years with the boxing legend. AC Fine Art will celebrate Pacheco’s diverse achievements with an opening night of live music, cigar rolling and a special book signing.

Giving artists of all kinds a fighting chance, RODEZ Art Gallery is proud to present “ART MACtown.”  Founded in 1962, MACtown, Inc. is a charitable organization whose primary mission is to improve the lives and further the independence of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in South Florida. Under the direction of artist and gallery owner George Rodez, small format works by more than 100 MACtown participants will be on display, in addition to one grand piece created by all participants. A silent auction will be held with all proceeds benefitting MACtown, Inc.

Renowned abstract artist Kathleen Staples will be at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery I inside the Mayfair complex. With paintings portraying a variety of textures and layers, “SWIMMING TO SESTOS” is sure to pack a punch through its different surface effects and intuitive expression of color.

Next door at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery II, “A Summer Show” by solo artist Luisa Mesa, fights to create symbols that connect with a deeper purpose. Every piece of Mesa’s artwork creates a different outlook and meaning, yet all coming together to constitute a whole. 

Not one to shy away from the ring, Max in the Grove will be featuring an exhibition by the Texan artist Daniel Padilla. With a steady hand, Padilla is known for working diligently with colorful and tranquil brush strokes. Alongside Padilla, Max in the Grove will also be showcasing the works of Pino, Chagall, Kaufman, Britto, Tadeo, Ferio and Peter Max. 

“AMERICAN ICONS,” a solo exhibition by Hernando Alzate at Cristina Chacon Gallery, will continue until August 20. The exhibition features legendary figures of our recent history blended with Neo Pop elements. It is located on Commodore Plaza. 

Local artist Amy Reshefsky will again be featured at FrameWorks Studio Gallery and GroveHouse. Artists will present an exhibition of member artists’ works, including those by Grovites Barbara Tejada, Isabelle “Izi” Schuette and Bobbi Headder.

Other galleries featured in the Walk include ArtWay 66, Blue Moon Studio of Art and Dharma Studio.

As part of the pre-show entertainment, the popular Paper Bag Heads are proud to present a “Paper Doll Fashion Show.” Taking place at the Mayfair Promenade Fountain, the show will feature life-sized fashion outfits constructed solely from paper. Designed by local artists, the “clothes” will be voted upon by the audience. Prizes for the most popular outfits will be donated by numerous Grove stores and include one-night stays for two at the Mayfair Hotel and Spa and the Grove Isle Hotel and Spa. 

Art inspired events such as these are provided by partnering galleries and the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID). The Coconut Grove BID exists to improve the quality and financial success of the Grove’s commercial core. It enhances Grove parking, lighting, sanitation, marketing, and safety, as well as supporting special events.

Ryan Trecartin’s Any Ever (2009-2010) is a seven-movie epic video produced in Miami with collaborator Lizzie Fitch and other contributors ranging from friends and artists to professional child actors.  The presentation of Any Ever at MoCA will be the first time that the work will be shown in its entirety in Miami, the city that was not only the setting for the movies and inspiration for some of their content, but also a character within the works. For the exhibition, MoCA’s galleries will transform into spaces that are quasi-recognizable as particular public and private settings, anchored by key seating elements. These environments will poetically relate the sets and themes of the movies. Another iteration of Any Ever will simultaneously be on view at MoMA PS1 in New York from June 19 through September 3, 2011. The presentation of Any Ever at MoCA is coordinated by MoCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

The artists in this exhibition use playful tactics to confront, alter and inhabit existing societal structures.  By shifting their artistic practices, the artists operate as active agents, employing curatorial, administrative, and educational strategies and aesthetics to insert new meanings into existing realms. Most of the artists will be creating new works specifically for this exhibition. Works by Darren Bader, Nina Beier, Adriana Lara, Natalia Ibanez Lario, Jose Carlos Martinat, Amilcar Packer, Anders Smebye, and Nicolas Paris Velez will be featured. Modify, As Needed is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is curated by MoCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

MoCA is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary in its Joan Lehman Building. An important part of the museum’s history is its strong support of Miami-based artists. Mark Handforth was the first Miami artist to receive a solo show at MoCA, North Miami in March 1996. He has since achieved major international recognition and has become an important role model for Miami artists.  This exhibition makes a strong statement about MoCA’s role in shaping Miami as an international center for contemporary art.

Handforth’s large-scale sculptures take their inspiration from everyday objects. Items such as an illuminated lamppost resting on the ground, a crying neon moon, a monumental coat hanger and a giant traffic stop sign are poetic, lyrical, and comical objects that wryly comment on daily life and human interaction. By blowing up their scale and distorting their form, Handforth imbues each object with a distinctive personality. Although each sculpture is a self-contained work, Handforth intended for groups of works to be shown together and has conceived the installation at MoCA as a landscape through which viewers can wander. The exhibition brings together over 30 works, including a major new light installation occupying over 80 feet of the museum’s wall that will highlight the unique space of MoCA’s current galleries designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and will lead to the groundbreaking for its new expansion. The exhibition will spread out to locations throughout South Florida, including an installation of Electric Tree, located in Griffing Park, North Miami that consists of a giant banyan tree illuminated by more than 60 fluorescent light fixtures. After moving to New York from her native Hungary in the early 1990s, Rita Ackermann first attracted attention for her drawings depicting young female figures representing the total freedom of living outside the rules and constraints of society. This survey exhibition examines the artist’s paintings throughout her career and the changes in her work that occurred through her immersion into Western culture. One of the few contemporary artists to discuss her work in terms of “style” rather than practice, Ackermann has forged a new visual language in painting, drawing and collages, which ranges from psychologically intense expressionism to colorfield abstraction. The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is curated by MoCA Executive Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater. A major monograph published by Rizzoli with essays by Clearwater, Harmony Korine, John Kelsey, Felix Ensslin and Josh Smith will accompany the exhibition.

Ragnar Kjartansson: Song is the first solo US museum exhibition of the work of Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. A musician as well as artist, Kjartansson (b. 1976) has been drawn to the theater and performance since he formed a band in his teenage years. The exhibition includes a selection of video works from the last decade. Kjartansson’s videos reflect an interest in music and theater and the personae of its performers, often coupled with extreme environments. The End (2008) features two musicians in a mountainous snowy landscape, while Satan is Real (2005) finds the naked artist buried to his chest in the lawn of a public park, playing a guitar.

In addition to his video work, Kjartansson has become known for inhabiting galleries and more unexpected locations where he performs live, often for extended periods. For the 2009 Venice Biennale, he painted portraits of his friend, every day for six months, in a crumbling palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal. Kjartansson’s approach wavers between besotted optimism and deadpan, sometimes unnerving, directness. Ritual, repetition, and an almost hallucinogenic reverie share the stage with humor, levity, and a charismatic impulse to entertain. The exhibition is organized by Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and is curated by Associate Curator Dan Byers.
