What started as one promise between two sisters is now the largest source of nonprofit funds
dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. Susan G. Komen for the Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale is part of this national network dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.
  • Since its inception in 1996, the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate has raised more than $10 million to help fund breast cancer screening, education, and treatment initiatives throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties.
  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure was named as having the most brand value among all non-profits in the U.S. by Harris Interactive and Komen ranked as the second most trusted non-profit organization in America (behind St. Jude Research Hospital.) They also received this year CHARITY NAVIGATOR'S coveted four-star rating for the fourth year in a row.
  • Seventy-five percent of the net dollars raised through local events, including the annual Race for the Cure, stays in the local community to fund breast cancer screening, education and treatment initiatives. The remaining 25 percent will be pooled with Komen's national efforts to fund research programs. This year nearly a million dollars stayed in the community.
  • In the 2009 Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, 18,990 individuals participated, including more than 900 breast cancer survivors and raised more than $2 million.
  • Last year the money raised funded 29 grants to a diverse group of not-for-profit health care organizations, public health agencies and community groups in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Monroe County that further the Susan G. Komen for the Cure mission. (Such as The Beautiful Gate)
  • The University of Miami was recently awarded $600,000 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to research immune-based therapy. Specifically, they are looking into the potential of a vaccine which would elicit immune responses to reverse cancer progression.
