Joey's Italian Café in Wynwood Launches Weekly Live Music Series

Joey’s Italian Café, a casual, elegant dining destination in Wynwood.

The affordable contemporary Italian café that helped to make Wynwood a dining and entertainment destination, Joey’s Italian Café, has added a weekly live music series on Thursdays. The restaurant aims to create a relaxed, loungey night in Wynwood where folks can come enjoy the sounds of local musicians while kicking back with a glass of wine and one of Joey’s authentic rustic dishes or famous pizzas. The restaurant also has a new happy hour each Thursday and Friday, from 6pm-7pm, where guests can enjoy half-off signature cocktails and complimentary antipasti at the bar.

Artists perform from 8pm-11pm on Thursdays. The line-up is impromptu; recent musical performers have included local luminaries Jennifer Wagoner, Taboca, Lina Gaudezzi and others. Line-up changes weekly.

Live entertainment takes place on the patio at Joey’s Italian Café, located at 2506 N.W. 2 Avenue in Wynwood every Thursday. For more information call 305-438-0488 or visit www.joeyswynwood.com. No cover or minimum. Valet parking is available for $5.

Established in December 2008, Joey’s Italian Café was the first restaurant to open in Wynwood since the area began its transformation into a hip Arts District, nearly a decade ago–and it created an immediate buzz. Food & Wine magazine cited Joey’s innovative thin-crusted pizza as one of the top pizzas in the U.S., local food critics raved and national coverage appeared in the Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe, among many others.

The affordable, chic restaurant is owned by Joey Goldman of Goldman Properties, which rejuvenates urban areas and transforms them into thriving global destinations. Joey’s serves Wynwood’s burgeoning arts community with a fine-tuned menu of healthy, classic dishes from Venice and other culturally rich Italian regions.

The restaurant’s décor is casual and elegant, encompassing 75 seats inside and on the private al fresco garden terrace that has become a favorite among artsy locals and food and wine enthusiasts from all over the world. Joey’s serves lunch and dinner Monday-Saturday.

Miami's Food Trucks Offer Something for Even the Most Discerning Palette

The Wheelin' Dealin' Street Food Festival at Magic City Casino

The popularity of food trucks is at an all-time high – and gaining momentum! While other U.S. cities including New York, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, have had established food truck scenes for several years (more than a decade in the case of Portland and LA), Miami's obsession with food trucks is fairly recent at only about two-years-old. Despite its nascency, food truck meet-ups in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties are more popular than ever.

Each truck has its own personality, customized with unique color schemes and graphics to reflect the vibe of the food and the chefs behind it. RYAN TRECARTIN: ANY EVER
June 24 - September 4, 2011

Ryan Trecartin, Ready (Re'Search Wait'S),
2009-2010, HD Video (26:49),
Chaney Family Collection, Houston
Ryan Trecartin’s Any Ever (2009-2010) is a seven-movie epic video produced in Miami with collaborator Lizzie Fitch and other contributors ranging from friends and artists to professional child actors.  The presentation of Any Ever at MoCA will be the first time that the work will be shown in its entirety in Miami, the city that was not only the setting for the movies and inspiration for some of their content, but also a character within the works. For the exhibition, MoCA’s galleries will transform into spaces that are quasi-recognizable as particular public and private settings, anchored by key seating elements. These environments will poetically relate the sets and themes of the movies. Another iteration of Any Ever will simultaneously be on view at MoMA PS1 in New York from June 19 through September 3, 2011. The presentation of Any Ever at MoCA is coordinated by MoCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

MODIFY, AS NEEDED
Knight Exhibition Series
September 23 - November 13, 2011

The artists in this exhibition use playful tactics to confront, alter and inhabit existing societal structures.  By shifting their artistic practices, the artists operate as active agents, employing curatorial, administrative, and educational strategies and aesthetics to insert new meanings into existing realms. Most of the artists will be creating new works specifically for this exhibition. Works by Darren Bader, Nina Beier, Adriana Lara, Natalia Ibanez Lario, Jose Carlos Martinat, Amilcar Packer, Anders Smebye, and Nicolas Paris Velez will be featured. Modify, As Needed is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is curated by MoCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib.

MARK HANDFORTH: ROLLING STOP
Knight Exhibition Series
November 30, 2011 - February 19, 2012

MoCA is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary in its Joan Lehman Building. An important part of the museum’s history is its strong support of Miami-based artists. Mark Handforth was the first Miami artist to receive a solo show at MoCA, North Miami in March 1996. He has since achieved major international recognition and has become an important role model for Miami artists.  This exhibition makes a strong statement about MoCA’s role in shaping Miami as an international center for contemporary art.

Handforth’s large-scale sculptures take their inspiration from everyday objects. Items such as an illuminated lamppost resting on the ground, a crying neon moon, a monumental coat hanger and a giant traffic stop sign are poetic, lyrical, and comical objects that wryly comment on daily life and human interaction. By blowing up their scale and distorting their form, Handforth imbues each object with a distinctive personality. Although each sculpture is a self-contained work, Handforth intended for groups of works to be shown together and has conceived the installation at MoCA as a landscape through which viewers can wander. The exhibition brings together over 30 works, including a major new light installation occupying over 80 feet of the museum’s wall that will highlight the unique space of MoCA’s current galleries designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and will lead to the groundbreaking for its new expansion. The exhibition will spread out to locations throughout South Florida, including an installation of Electric Tree, located in Griffing Park, North Miami that consists of a giant banyan tree illuminated by more than 60 fluorescent light fixtures. Mark Handforth: Rolling Stop is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is curated by MoCA Executive Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater.

RITA ACKERMANN
March 15 - May 6, 2012

93 1/4" X 45" X 2 3/4",
Collection of the Museum of
Contemporary Art, North Miami
After moving to New York from her native Hungary in the early 1990s, Rita Ackermann first attracted attention for her drawings depicting young female figures representing the total freedom of living outside the rules and constraints of society. This survey exhibition examines the artist’s paintings throughout her career and the changes in her work that occurred through her immersion into Western culture. One of the few contemporary artists to discuss her work in terms of “style” rather than practice, Ackermann has forged a new visual language in painting, drawing and collages, which ranges from psychologically intense expressionism to colorfield abstraction. The exhibition is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami and is curated by MoCA Executive Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater. A major monograph published by Rizzoli with essays by Clearwater, Harmony Korine, John Kelsey, Felix Ensslin and Josh Smith will accompany the exhibition.

RAGNAR KJARTANSSON: SONG
Knight Exhibition Series
Summer 2012

Ragnar Kjartansson, God, 2007,
DVD Installation30 Minutes,
Collection of Museum of
Contemporary Art, North Miami
Ragnar Kjartansson: Song is the first solo US museum exhibition of the work of Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. A musician as well as artist, Kjartansson (b. 1976) has been drawn to the theater and performance since he formed a band in his teenage years. The exhibition includes a selection of video works from the last decade. Kjartansson’s videos reflect an interest in music and theater and the personae of its performers, often coupled with extreme environments. The End (2008) features two musicians in a mountainous snowy landscape, while Satan is Real (2005) finds the naked artist buried to his chest in the lawn of a public park, playing a guitar.

In addition to his video work, Kjartansson has become known for inhabiting galleries and more unexpected locations where he performs live, often for extended periods. For the 2009 Venice Biennale, he painted portraits of his friend, every day for six months, in a crumbling palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal. Kjartansson’s approach wavers between besotted optimism and deadpan, sometimes unnerving, directness. Ritual, repetition, and an almost hallucinogenic reverie share the stage with humor, levity, and a charismatic impulse to entertain. The exhibition is organized by Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and is curated by Associate Curator Dan Byers.

Wynwood Art District Vespa Tours Presented by Roam Rides

Sure, South Beach has a lot going on - bars, clubs, restaurants, shopping, and, of course, sun, sand, and surf. But there is a whole other side of Miami, waiting to be discovered just 15 minutes away. Hop on a Vespas and explore the pulsing heart of the Miami art scene in the Wynwood Art District. Miami-based Roam Rides offers three tours, each focusing on different aspects of this growing neighborhood. Come share our excitement and get to know a different Miami!

The Street Art Tour, developed exclusively for us by street.art.cycles, the creators of the original bicycle graffiti tour, takes riders across the Venetian Causeway and winds up through Wynwood and the Design District. Many stops along the way focus on both local and internationally known artists who have created some stunning work on both public and private properties. An in-depth and fascinating exploration of the artists and crews, and the rules by which they respect tags, bombs, throw-ups and pieces, this tour is unlike anything you've seen in Miami before.

The Gallery Tour features select galleries in Wynwood that showcase the diversity and depth of the exploding art scene in Miami. From more traditional galleries featuring well-known artists to galleries that focus on artists from a particular cultural backgroud to avant garde galleries promoting emerging artists, the tour gives riders a great cross-section of what is going on in the Wynwood Arts District.

The Collections Tour features an in-depth visit to one of the major Collection houses in Wynwood, either the Rubell Collection or the Margulies Collection. These are both very large spaces-45,000 sq. ft.-that house huge collections of paintings, sculptures, photos, video, and installations. More like museums than galleries, these locations offer a tour of the collection led by a docent.

All tours finish up with brunch/lunch at Morgan's. Morgan's is a spectacular restaurant on 29th Street in Wynwood, featuring classic American fare prepared beautifully. They call themselves "Miami's Modern Home-Style Comfort Food." Morgan's has created a fixed menu for those wrapping up their tour. The cost of lunch plus gratuity is included in the tour.

All tours included any entrance fees, tolls both ways, and lunch including gratuity, and the cost is per person. It does not include the scooter rental. We are offering a discounted rate for riders who only want the scooter for the duration of the tour, $25 per scooter. For riders who want to keep the scooter beyond the tour, regular rates apply:
- Street Art Tour: $55/person
- Gallery Tour: $55/person
- Collections Tour: $65/person

Tours operates on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Street Art Only on Sunday). The tours begin at 11am, and depart from Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, which is located at the intersection of Purdy Ave. and the Venetian Causeway. Rriders should arrive at 10:30 to check everyone in and make sure they are all comfortable on their Vespas. Tour will last 3-3.5 hours, including brunch/lunch.

The tours will take riders across the Venetian Causeway and up into Wynwood and the Design District, avoiding busy roads and bad neighborhoods.

University Of Miami Wynwood Project Space Presents Brian Gefen's 'Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures'

The Department of Art and Art History, in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami presents the Master of Fine Arts exhibition by contemporary artist, Brian Gefen, beginning March 12, 2011.

The exhibition titled, “Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures” is a progressive series of narrative artwork that grasps ideas out of various 20th century artists to create an endless graphic narrative. The exhibition will be available for viewing from March 12-25 at the University of Miami Wynwood Project Space, 2200-A N.W. 2 Ave., Miami.

Brian Gefen
Potato site 3, 2010
Acrylic Paint and Mixed Medium
40 x 30
The theme of the exhibition, "Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures," demonstrates a conflicting mythical world in which characters battle one another for food and the basic amenities of life. The mythical world exposes a system of nobility, featuring King Steamer and Queen Tatiana Dee Dee.  Untitled Creatures is tribal, with leaders such as Doyleox, Helmet Jack and Hixon.

"Development of Power" controls the food and weapons which are heavily guarded by the security farmers who are constantly on alert because the opposing, Untitled creatures, lurk around the land in an attempt to steal food.  The two groups cannot agree on anything and as a result tension grows. This discord is displayed through Brian Gefen’s series of paintings in "Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures."

Aesthetically, Brian Gefen’s painting surfaces are visually flat but complimented by many strongly contrasting color combinations and lively characters illustrating events in the ongoing, unfolding artistic drama of "Development of Power vs. Untitled Creatures." Gefen uses an array of mixed media which include acrylic paint, spray paint, markers, photos, computer printouts and vinyl stickers.

For more information regarding the artist, email bgefen@aol.com. A full schedule of exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art. In celebration of the exhibition opening, there will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, March 12, from 6-10 pm. Other viewing times can be arranged by appointment.

For more information about the exhibition or Wynwood Project Space, call (305) 284-3161 or email m.cardoso1@miami.edu.

Miami's Art Scene Is HOT!

With several major international festivals a year, entire neighborhoods revitalizing, thanks to art communities, and galleries featuring ever-changing exhibitions of the best in contemporary art, Miami has become a serious player in the global art world.

Although Art Basel Miami Beach, an offshoot of the Art Basel festival in Switzerland, gave Miami art a much needed PR boost with its arrival in 2002, artists have been quietly reinventing Miami for decades.

The now-famous Wynwood Art District started as long ago as 1986 with the Bakehouse Art Complex project, which provided for artists' space inside an old bakery building. As artists started moving into other buildings, the District decided formally to unite in 2003, and today has more than 70 galleries. Every second Saturday of the month, a community-wide Art Walk affords visitors a chance to peek into a variety of galleries in one evening.

Another long-time pillar of the art community in Miami is Brazilian native Romero Britto. Britto, whose paintings and sculptures are featured on five continents, in more than 100 galleries, has been a fixture in Miami for 18 years. Besides his Lincoln Road gallery, Britto has a studio in the Design District and many works visible all over town, including on the sides of buildings.

Besides the wonderful Art Basel Miami Beach festival held each December, with more than 220 leading art galleries showing works from more than 2,000 artists, Miami abounds with other festivals during the season. The same weekend as Art Basel, Art Miami showcases still more art in the mid-town Miami area, home to MiMo (Miami Modern) architecture in the 1950s and 60s, including the historic Bacardi headquarters, seen here. In Coral Gables, the Beaux Arts Festival, on the campus of the University of Miami, is in its 59th year. The world-renowned Coconut Grove Arts Festival has been beautifying "The Grove" for 45 years!

Miami has several great art museums as well: the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum and the Wolfsonian, both at Florida International University; the Bass Museum on Miami Beach; the Lowe at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, the Miami Art Museum downtown (soon to relocate to a new state of the art building)and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami. MOCA was recently written up in the UK Telegraph as "one of the most exciting art museums in America."

Thanks to fantastic art museums, galleries and events, the rest of the world is finally discovering that there's more to look at in Miami than the beautiful beaches!
