Art Deco Weekend 2011: Selling Glamour and Style

During the 1920s and 30s, advertisers transitioned from simple one-on-one sales pitches to a broader and more subtle style of engaging larger audiences by eliciting feelings and selling ideas. Coupled with that was the rise in mass circulation magazines, national radio broadcasts, and the influential power of the motion picture - promotion took on a new meaning and advertising was forever altered.

Lecture Series
The three lectures offered for this year's Selling Glamour and Style theme highlight the influences of the Art Deco era on the modern marketing machine.
  • Saturday, January 15, 1pm: Miami as Cultural Intersection: Architecture, Art, and Commerce - Artist and professor Mark T. Smith examines the influence of the arts in our everyday lives by highlighting the links between high and low culture: architecture, design, fine art, and advertising. The program also features Miami Ad School students who participated in the 2010 Art Deco Weekend poster design competition.
  • Saturday, January 15, 3pm: Tropical Art Deco's Influence on the 1939 World's Fair: World Fair attendee and aficionado Alan Raynor explores the two embodiments of Art Deco design, the 1939 New York World’s Fair and the "tropical" Art Deco style of Miami.
  • Sunday, January 16, 1pm: Selling Art Deco Preservation: Preservation activist Betty Gutierrez, discusses how Barbara Baer Capitman used her knowledge of corporate identity to promote historic preservation. Capitman, founder of the Miami Design Preservation League, spent much of her professional career working in the design and publishing world as a magazine editor. Her first book, American Trademark Designs: A Survey with 732 Marks, Logos, and Corporate Identity Symbols, is still considered a top trademark resource.
