The Shops at Sunset Place will present its “Living Fit! Health and Beauty Expo” on Saturday, February 25 from noon to 5 p.m., featuring fitness expert and lifestyle coach Angelique Millis. Many experts, services and organizations whose mission it is to educate families about the importance of healthy and balanced living will also be joining the effort. This event is free to the public and also features other fitness experts, beauty samplings, health screenings and giveaways.

The Annual Miami International Map Fair Takes Place This Weekend at HistoryMiami

This annual Miami International Map Fair showcases antique maps, rare books, panoramas and atlases from around the world! The fair takes place Saturday, Feb. 4-Sunday, Feb. 5, from 10am-5pm, at HistoryMiami, located at 101 W. Flagler Street.

Peruse and purchase antique maps from some of the finest map dealers in the world. Learn about maps through a series of lectures by experts in the field and enjoy special events held throughout the weekend. For a complete list of events during the Map Fair, please see the official website.

Admission is $5 for HistoryMiami members and $15 for non-members. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Admission includes entrance to the international dealer’s marketplace, access to expert opinions on your own map(s), and the opportunity to win door prizes. The Jewish Museum Of Florida Presents "Max Miller: Final Mourner's Kaddish: 333 Days in Painting" Opening Jan. 31

After the death of his father, Murray A. Miller, artist Max Miller chose to undertake the custom of saying Kaddish, the Jewish prayer of mourning. This prayer, exalting the name of God, is recited in the presence of a congregation daily for eleven months.

Miller, who grew up Orthodox with Yiddish as his first language said, "The Kaddish provided me with time to grieve and reflect on spiritual aspects of life and death, and because of this I felt compelled to create images that captured my response to what I was experiencing."

The artist's grief provided the inspiration for a vivid, moving and cathartic account of his experience of honoring his father through the daily recitation of the Kaddish.

As an historic record and for personal reasons, Miller created a watercolor of each the synagogues he visited during the 333 days of saying Kaddish in New York, Vermont, Ohio and Florida (including Congregation Beth Jacob, that is now the Jewish Museum of Florida).

The 50 vibrant watercolors, considered by the artist to be a coherent unit, are painted on paper. As a whole, the collection suggests the diversity of the social and religious settings that Miller frequented, as well as the breadth of personal transformation and learning he experienced over the course of those eleven months.

Though the form varies, humanity's expression of mourning transcends time, society, and culture. The extraordinary body of work that ensued is an intimate document of Miller's faith, observance and the Jewish community. The ultimate unity of the Jewish people is found in these remarkable works.

Each image is distinct in its orientation, composition and focus. Depictions range from exterior to interior, from human to architectural portraits, from limited to wide-ranging color schemes. The richness of his color and line inscribes the vitality of faith and continuance of ritual and tradition. The exhibition also includes a stunning portrait of Miller's father, against a silver leaf background, an image of iconic and descriptive power that sets the tone for the show.

Accompanying the images are the artist's commentaries, based on his thoughts, feelings and experiences with those he met during this pursuit. While honoring the Jewish tradition of memorializing a parent, Miller came to learn a great deal about his father and their shared heritage.

Though the daily ritual of saying Kaddish has formally ended for Miller, bringing this project to fruition provides an opportunity for those within the Jewish community, and for those in other communities, of all ages, to witness and honor the tradition of the Mourner's Kaddish, and to reflect on their own humanity and spiritual journeys.

This exhibition by Max Miller originated at the Yeshiva University Museum in New York City and is sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Max Miller is known for his abstract paintings that embrace color and line, as well as his figurative paintings of human and animal subjects. He has had exhibitions in New York City and throughout the East Coast. He received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Yale University. He has been awarded numerous fellowships, including a New York Foundation for the Arts, Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Arts and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants.

The Jewish Museum of Florida is housed in two adjacent lovingly restored historic buildings on South Beach that were once synagogues for Miami Beach's first Jewish congregation. The Museum's focal point is its core exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida - 1763 to the Present and temporary history and art exhibits that change periodically. Sea Trek Reef Encounter at the Miami Seaquarium

The Sea Trek Reef Encounter is a helmet diving experience that allows guests to become one with the Miami Seaquarium's 300,000-gallon tropical reef aquarium, while moving in ethereal slow motion in a near zero gravity diving system.

"Sea Trekking," developed by Sub Sea Systems, can be experienced by non-divers, ages 10 and above; no certification or swimming skills are necessary. In the magnificent Reef Aquarium at the Miami Seaquarium participants may Sea Trek as deep as 15 feet under the "sea" to swim with more than 3,000 fish and 80 different species of marine life.

The Sea Trek Reef Encounter at Miami Seaquarium lasts approximately 90 minutes, including an orientation session. Twenty minutes are spent under warter.

Award-Winning Broadway Musical Next to Normal Now Showing at Actors' Playhouse

With powerful lyrics and an electrifying pop-rock score of more than 30 songs, this intense, emotional and ultimately hopeful musical aims right for the heart with its story of a family coming to terms with its past and bravely facing its future.

Actors' Playhouse is proud to be the first regional theatre in South Florida to produce the show following its long Broadway run and National Tour. Next to Normal will be presented at the Miracle Theatre through February 12.

The most talked about new show on Broadway, Next to Normal is the acclaimed and compelling hit-musical "that pushes Broadway in new directions," according to Rolling Stone magazine. Next to Normal's surging score, with emotional book and lyrics, tells the story of one woman’s struggle with manic depression and the toll it takes on her family.

"Next to Normal is the most powerful and riveting piece of musical theatre written in the last decade," said Artistic Director David Arisco. "I'm extremely excited to follow in the footsteps of last year's August: Osage County with a production of another Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Next to Normal features an impressive cast with strong ties to both the New York and South Florida theatre communities. Jodie Langel, playing Diana, premiered on Broadway as the role of Cosette in Les Miserables and later went on to play the role of Eponine. Now living back in South Florida, Langel's Broadway tour credits include the role of Bertrande in the Pre-Broadway tour of Martin Guerre, the Narrator in the National Tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Grizabella in the National Tour of CATS. Mark Sanders, who was last seen as Perchik on the Broadway National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof, will play the role of Dan. Eddy Rioseco, a native Miami boy, will play the role of Gabe. Rioseco's New York shows include Fame (Nick), Mamma Mia (Pepper) and Wicked (Boq).

Next to Normal features music by Tom Kitt, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, and direction by David Arisco.

The show opened on Friday, January 20 and will run through February 12, 2012. Evening performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with afternoon matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m. A special weekday matinee is scheduled on Wednesday, January 25 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $40, and on Friday and Saturday evenings $48. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with identification. Discounts are based on availability and exclude Saturday and Sunday.

Jewish Museum Honors Florida's Jews from Poland During Florida Jewish History Month

This year's observance of Florida Jewish History Month, in conjunction with the Museum's current exhibit, "Wooden Synagogues of Poland and the Florida Connection," will honor the 80% of American Jews whose origins are from Poland.

Jews have lived in Poland for more than 1,000 years. Poland was the center of the European Jewish world before World War II, when the Holocaust resulted in the death of 90% (3 million) of the Polish Jews. By preserving the memories of families, such as those on this panel, the Museum is able to keep Jewish cultural heritage alive and transmit it to future generations.
At the January 8 kick-off event, the Museum will award cash prizes to the winners of its statewide student creative writing contest. The Museum challenged middle and high school students to connect to their own cultural heritage, by answering the following question: "How does a place tell a story that represents your cultural heritage?"
As part of the celebration, Joe's Stone Crab restaurant is providing their famous key lime pie, designated in 2006 as Florida's official state pie. The founders of Joe's, Joe and Jennie Weiss, were the first Jews to settle on Miami Beach in 1913. Joe's is still owned and run by the family, and has been open since 1913.
The concept for Florida Jewish History Month began at the Jewish Museum of Florida. Founding Executive Director Marcia Jo Zerivitz worked closely with legislators to translate the Museum's mission into a statewide observance. In April 2003, Governor Jeb Bush signed a bill into that officially designated the month of January as Florida Jewish History Month. Florida is the first state in the nation to have a month dedicated to the tremendous contributions of Jews in its state.
The success of Florida Jewish History Month inspired the legislation for Jewish American Heritage Month, also initiated by the Museum, and observed each May, with a Proclamation signed by President George Bush in April 2006.

Rachel Kosowski, 1938.

The family of Rachel Kosowski (Abramowitz) settled in Kosov, Poland about 300 years ago. She was born in Yanov in 1928. The family's plan to immigrate to Palestine on September 7, 1939 was thwarted by the outbreak of World War II on September 1, when Germany invaded Poland. The family was arrested and sent to Siberia.
In 1946, they were allowed to return to Poland to vote for the Communists; however, they found severe anti-semitism and government-sponsored pogroms there. An organization called Bricha (escape) had been formed to find and bring Polish Jews to Germany on their way to Palestine. Bricha rescued Rachel's family and sent them to a DP (displaced persons) Camp. Rachel met her husband there, U.S. Army Chaplain (1st Lieutenant) Mayer Abramowitz. The couple moved to Miami Beach in 1951.

The family of Allan Horowitz (Hall) from Krakow walked east to the Russian area in 1939, when the Germans overran the western part of Poland. In 1941, when the Germans came, the family went into hiding. After the war they were liberated.
Father, Edmund, worked for the Polish government but was purged by the Soviets and sent to Siberia. He broke out of prison and fled to Paris with his wife, Maria. Edmund and Maria separated from their sons so that the Soviets could not use the children as hostages. The family eventually reunited and immigrated to the U.S. in 1947.

Alice (Weinglas) Vinik was born in Biala Podlaska between the two world wars. In late 1939, when the Germans came, her family escaped to the Russian side. They were captured by Russian soldiers and forced to live and labor in the forest.
Alice met her husband, Max Eiman from Bielsko, Poland. The family members were finally released and reunited in 1946 and returned to Poland. Due to the antisemitism and pogroms, they escaped and were smuggled across the borders.
After time in Displaced Persons (DP) Camps in Austria and Germany, Alice came to America in 1949, and settled in Miami Beach in 1956.

Louis Schneider's parents, Joseph and Debora, were born in Lipsko/Narol. His family was separated when his father was caught by French police in 1942. Louis' mother attempted to smuggle Louis and his sister into Switzerland, but they were caught at the border.
While traversing northern Italy, their train was bombed by American planes and they were rescued from the wreckage by Italians. Louis spent the rest of the war hiding as "Luigi Sarto" in a Catholic monastery in Italy.
The family miraculously reunited in 1946.

Bahamas Express Ferry Links Florida and the Bahamas With Fast-Ferry Service

The Baleària Group marked a new milestone in travel with a high speed maritime transport service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Bahama island. The new service, which operates under the Bahamas Express brand, is a firm commitment to the internationalization of the company and also, therefore, to consolidating the company’s growth in the current economic climate.

"The Bahamas Express service provides an important link between South Florida and The Bahamas" said David Johnson, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. "It is an affordable and easily accessible option that appeals to a variety of travelers, particularly families and for those seeking a relaxing and hassle free route to The Bahamas. We look forward to treating guests to our Bahamian hospitality, whether coming for a day or staying for a week."

The fast ferry, Pinar del Río, will operate the new service between Florida and the Bahamas, which undertakes the 76-mile crossing in 2.5 hours. Baleària Bahamas Express operates on a daily basis, except on Wednesdays, departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale at 10am and returning to the port at 10:30pm, allowing U.S. passengers to take day trips to Grand Bahama island.

The fast ferry Pinar del Río, which sails at a speed of 32 knots, has a capacity to hold up to 463 passengers. The ship also boasts different services such as a bar-cafeteria, duty-free shopping and tourist class and first class accommodation, among others. The interior will also be decorated with the same graphics, which depict the sea bed and is dominated by bright colors.

President of Baleària Adolfo Utor highlighted the potential of this area of the Caribbean and explained that it complements the routes which the company operates in the Mediterranean. Utor also pointed out that there is a market of more than 200,000 passengers per year on this new route adding that the company is also working on opening another connection to the Bahamian island of Bimini.

Peace Palooza 2011: A Celebration of Love and Oneness at Tobacco Road

The Peace Palooza 2011 installment of this annual event will emphasize music by performers that made significant contributions in the 1960s; from Rock 'n' Roll, Soul, Pop, Reggae, Blues and other genres of music. There will be two stages of music and something for everyone to enjoy!

Proceeds from this event will be donated to a local nonprofit organization with a mission that promotes nonviolent action and seeks to reduce the use of violence worldwide.

Alligator Ron's Holiday Hoedown is a fundraiser for Zoo Miami’s up-coming exhibit, Florida: Mission Everglades, set to open in 2014. It will take place on Dec. 3 at Green Glades Ranch (21111 SW 16 St., Weston) from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

There will be live music from the country band Shadow Creek, an open bar, and great BBQ all to benefit the Florida: Mission Everglades. Since it is a hoedown in December, the attire requested is Holiday Western Wear. Light up cowboy boot mugs will be sold for a $20 donation.

At Zoo Miami, guests can enjoy beautiful animal-shaped lights as they stroll zoo walkways during the 8 nights of Zoo Lights, have Dinner with Santa, and watch the animals open their specially-prepared gifts during Holiday Gifts for the Animals.

The zoo’s glorious grounds come to light for eight brilliant nights during Zoo Lights, Dec. 16-23 from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. (ticket booths close at 9:30 p.m.). Guests can enjoy dozens of bright animal-shaped lights along our walkways, listen to wonderful holiday music, sip hot chocolate, munch on delicious cookies, and take a ride on a camel, the wildlife carrousel or the hippo slide (the world’s largest inflatable slide). Included with admission is a pair of 3-D glasses, which will make the Zoo Lights experience even more engaging and amusing.

General admission is only $5 per person plus tax. Food, beverages, camel rides, carrousel and hippo slide are all available at additional costs.

Dinner With Santa

Dinner with Santa will take place on Dec. 17, from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Bring the kids to meet him before he has to rush back to the North Pole! Enjoy a delicious holiday dinner with the family, photos with Santa, a holiday plush gift and holiday craft-making for the little ones!

Sea Trek Reef Encounter

The Sea Trek Reef Encounter is a helmet diving experience that allows guests to become one with the park's reef aquarium, while moving in ethereal slow motion in a near zero gravity diving system.

"Sea Trekking," developed by Sub Sea Systems, Inc., can be experienced by non-divers, ages 10 and above; no certification or swimming skills are necessary. In the magnificent Reef Aquarium at Miami Seaquarium participants may Sea Trek as deep as 15 feet under the "sea" to swim with more than 3,000 fish and 80 different species of marine life.

The Fair, now in its 28th year, is a multi-day literary party in held November at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

During the wildly popular Street Fair, held Nov. 18-20, more than 350 authors read and discuss their work, including the Latin American and Spanish authors who participate in the IberoAmerican Authors Program.

Thousands of South Florida schoolchildren will help kick off the Street Fair, making the trip downtown on Friday Nov. 18 to hear authors and participate in Children’s Alley activities, including theater, arts-and-crafts, storytelling and readings by children’s book authors. Comics and graphic novels are once again featured, with the school of comics on Friday and a new section just for kids and teens, as well as presentations over the weekend by renowned graphic novelists and illustrators.

During Street Fair weekend, more than 250 publishers and booksellers exhibit and sell books, with special features like the antiquarians, who showcase of signed first editions, original manuscripts and other collectibles.

The first Miami Book Fair International, founded by Miami Dade College and community partners, took place in 1984. Since then it has been recognized as the nation’s finest literary festival. In 2001, the Fair became part of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College, a cultural and academic initiative that promotes the advancement and appreciation of literature throughout the year.

Magical Snowfall Returns for its 9th Year at Dolphin Mall

Dolphin Mall Rings in the Holiday Season with a Winter Wonderland in South Florida.

Dolphin Mall invites everyone to experience the ninth annual Magical Snowfall. The free winter festivities in Miami begin at Dolphin Mall at the Ramblas Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and continue into the New Year. There will be a snowfall at 7 p.m. daily, with an additional snowfall at 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Beginning Monday, December 19 there will be a 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. snowfall every day until Monday, January 2, 2012. There will be no snow on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), or New Year’s Day (January 1, 2012).

In true Dolphin Mall holiday tradition, magical wands will be distributed every night to children under 12 years of age, when their parents sign up to receive the Dolphin Mall e-bulletin.

At the strikes of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., the children will wave their wands in the air and magically the snow will return to the mall while illuminating the sky with a warm holiday glow. Youngsters can pick up their wands 30 minutes before each show.

Dolphin Mall is an enclosed value retail/entertainment/dining destination with 240 retailers, restaurants and entertainment options. Traveling with your pets can be a truly civilized experience. Here is some information to make your next trip with your furry family member easy and enjoyable:

Before Departure

Get your pet used to traveling by transporting them around town in their carrier.

· Buy a carrier that allows your pet to move around comfortably and that suits their personality
· Socialize your pet as much as possible since he/she will be exposed to many people, sounds and even other animals when traveling.

Tip: Put their favorite toys and chews in their carrier and allow them to spend time in it at home.

Pets In The Sky

Check with your airline for their policy regarding travel with your furry family members. Here are the general guidelines:

· There is often a 20-pound limit, which includes pet and carrier
· Pet carrier dimensions of 13-inches high X 9-inches wide are acceptable
· Airlines usually limit two pets in the first class cabin and five in coach, so book early
· There will be a $75-$100 charge each way

Tip: To keep your pet hydrated, use a medicine dropper to provide small amounts of water to pet during the trip.

New, Interactive Art Installation At Miami International Airport By Artist Christoper Janney

Harmonic Convergence, the newest, large-scale art installation by artist, architect and composer Christopher Janney, is nearing completion at the Miami International Airport. Janney terms Harmonic Convergence “an abstraction of South Florida in color and sound.”

The official dedication of Harmonic Convergence, hosted by Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places, will take place in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami 2011, held Dec. 1-4. Art Basel Miami Beach is the largest art fair in the U.S.

Harmonic Convergence features a 72-foot-long window wall with diamond-shaped panes of colored glass in front of a white structural steel “X-Bracing” frame. With a palette of over 150 transparent colors, Janney has created a gradually changing pattern ranging from deep reds to bright violets, similar to a rainbow.

The project is part of Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program and is located in the passenger connector walkway that is the entrance into the airport from the new the “MIA Mover” automated transit system.

As travelers enter the space, they will hear a complex set of sounds Janney recorded during trips to the Florida Everglades, scuba dives in the ocean, and other natural environments of South Florida. In addition, two video cameras installed in the ceiling feed information to the computer regarding the pedestrian activity within the space, influencing the density of the sound-score. At the top of each hour, a short composition with percussion instruments plays, marking the time of day.

“This is my fifth project in South Florida,” Janney states. “It is one of my favorite places in the world. I love the sounds of the subtropics most particularly the Everglades, the ocean shore and underwater sounds, especially sounds both real, as in whales and porpoises, and imagined, i.e. mermaids and Atlantis."

Harmonic Convergence is a replacement for Janney’s 1997 airport commission Harmonic Runway, which was removed from Concourse A after changes to the airport occurred due to 9/11 security. That former artwork had become an icon of South Florida, featured in numerous magazines and on film including the Harrison Ford feature, “Random Hearts” and the Nicholas Cage film, “8MM.”

Trained as an architect and jazz musician, Janney is an American artist whose work explores the relationships between sound and architecture, often-transforming otherwise ordinary spaces into “hyper-reality” environments.

Educated at Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Janney has explored the intersection of architecture and music for more than 30 years, creating temporary and permanent installations throughout the U.S. and Europe.

The 15th Annual “Miracle On 136th Street” Holiday Parade at The Falls

The Falls 15th annual Miracle on 136th Street Holiday Parade will soon be marching its way into South Florida to kick off the most wonderful time of the year with a special guest starring as Grand Marshal.

Following the parade, The Falls officially kicks off the holiday season with the lighting of their more than one million white lights in the gardens that line the shopping area. The holiday lights will be on display through Jan. 6, 2012.

This year, the parade will benefit the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, an innovative learning, teaching and training initiative dedicated to elevating the quality of early care and education in Miami-Dade County and beyond.

HistoryMiami Presents Ghost Tours Of Miami City Cemetery

In honor of Halloween, HistoryMiami's City Tours is hosting ghoulish Miami City Cemetery tours. There are two nighttime tours; on Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29 from 8pm-10pm. For those faint-of-heart, the daylight walk is on Saturday, October 29 from 10am-noon.

Many prominent figures are buried at Miami’s City Cemetery, including settler Julia Tuttle, known by many as "the mother of Miami," and business pioneers like the Burdine family. It was created in 1887, making it the first and oldest cemetery in Miami. Visitors can appreciate the rare tropical plants and trees here, as well as, admire the Mediterranean Revival architecture, and the historic styles of the tombstones and mausoleums.

These Ghost Tours offer a unique opportunity to learn more about Miami’s fascinating past through the cemetery’s inhabitants. Featuring historian Dr. Paul George and other HistoryMiami guides, tourgoers will hear some of the tragic and bizarre stories of those entombed at City Cemetery, for example, the story of the “Lady in Concrete,” a woman buried in concrete by her loving husband who chose this method to preserve her body for eternity.

South Florida International Auto Show Set With 2012 Models

The 41st edition of the South Florida International Auto Show opens October 28 for its annual 10-day run at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Each year, some 40 major auto manufacturers fill the hall with several hundred new cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs and make this South Beach event one of America’s top five in attendance.

“Today’s economy has fueled a strong interest in smaller, more efficient cars,” said Lombardo Perez, Auto Show chairman, “and the show this year will be loaded with the latest hybrids, electrics, diesels and conventional vehicles that squeeze more value and performance out of a tank full.”

One lucky person will win this year’s giveaway car, a brand new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. This exciting new subcompact is the only car in its class built in America. It’s peppy but sips gasoline, comes with 10 airbags and has lots of plug-in options up front. Its crisp handling? It was tuned by Corvette engineers.

The Boss Mustang was born in 1969, then it played hard to get, and now it’s back for 2012 as the Boss 302 Laguna Edition, honoring the Monterey Bay track where records are set. And it’s this year’s Official Show Car. The new Boss/Laguna is lighter, stronger, has more grunt under the hood and comes in vintage colors that say “let’s go!” Ford calls it the quickest, best-handling straight-production Mustang ever offered.

The show’s perennial favorites return. Memory Lane this year features 20 vehicles dating from a 1930 Ford Model A to a 1981 Corvette. And it includes a fuel sipper for its day—the 1961 Nash Metropolitan. In Million Dollar Alley visitors can fantasize about their ultimate joy toy, a six-figure motorcar. Again this year a Green Way special exhibit will feature some of the industry’s most fuel efficient cars. Auto Show Mall features basics and bling to make your ride special. Camp Jeep and an outside test drive program will put visitors behind the wheel of popular new models.

“As always at this huge auto show,” added Perez, “families and individuals can see and sit inside hundreds of new cars under one roof at their leisure. It’s a once-a-year chance to get close to the newest models, to see what’s coming off today’s more efficient assembly lines.”

The 41st Annual South Florida International Auto Show takes place Friday, October 28 through Sunday, November 6, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach. Admission is $10 for adults, $3 for children 6-12, and children under 6 are admitted free.

Third Annual Ability Explosion Set To Blast Off On South Beach, Oct. 19-23

This weeklong showcase of the abilities of people with disabilities, Ability Explosion, will take place on sunny South Beach, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19, with events running through the 23rd.

"The purpose of the Ability Explosion is to gather all of us, and to share and enjoy our experience together," said R. David New, the event's organizer and chairman of the Miami Beach Disability Access Committee. "We also want to exhibit the vast and varied abilities of people with disabilities, while providing viable solutions for challenges, whether physical, visual, hearing or intellectual."

It's the extraordinary series of educational, informative and entertaining seminars and events from the world of arts, sports and entertainment focusing solely on the abilities of people living with disabilities! Many of the people featured in the events have physical, visual, hearing or intellectual disabilities.

Ability Explosion has become the largest celebratory event of its kind in the U.S. and will be informing, creating and involving communities with a wonderful series of events that are open to everyone. MoCA Art Institute Offers New Art Program For 3-5 Year Olds on the Second Thursday of Every Month

Stories and imagination come alive with the MoCA Art Institute’s new program for preschoolers ages 3-5 and their parents or caregivers.

In Start Together, young children will create art projects inspired by favorite children’s books, as a way to learn the basics of color and design, develop fine motor skills and encourage a love of reading.

Start Together will be held monthly from through May 2012, on the second Thursday of the month from 10am-11am. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Actors' Playhouse Kicks Off the 2011-2012 "You Can't Stop the Beat" Season with the Tony Award-winning Smash Broadway Hit-Musical Hairspray

It’s time to let your hair down and dance the night away as Hairspray, Broadway’s musical comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture, opens at the Miracle Theatre on October 14. Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score, Hairspray launches the Actors' Playhouse 2011-2012 "You Can't Stop the Beat" Season, aerosol-style.

In Hairspray it's 1962—the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? South Florida audiences will be swept away by this international smash-hit musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter and romance – and enough deliriously tuneful songs to fill a nonstop platter party.

The Actors’ Playhouse production, which runs through November 13, features Actors' Playhouse's own Carbonell Award-winning Artistic Director David Arisco as Edna Turnblad, Tracy's larger-than-life mother. Arisco has a long history of acting and directing and was last seen onstage in 2004 starring as Tevye in Actors' Playhouse's production of Fiddler on the Roof. He promises that despite his varied resume, audiences have never seen him like this before!

"Hairspray is the most exciting, fun-filled Broadway musical of the last decade. We've assembled a stellar cast, the areas top designers, and I'm even willing to dress up like a woman and return to the stage to bring our community the most joy they'll have in the theatre in years," Arisco said. "This infectious musical, even more than the original movie or the latest film release, is exactly what theatre lovers need to escape from the doom and gloom that surrounds us today. As The New York Times said 'If life were everything it should be, it would be more like Hairspray. It's Irresistible.' "

Multitasking Arisco, who is also directing the production, along with the assistance of Choreographer Barbara Flaten and Musical Director David Nagy, has assembled a dream cast to back him up on stage including Hairspray veterans Joline Mujica, a Miami-native and University of Miami Alumni, as heroine Tracy Turnblad, and Matthew Ragas as heartthrob Link Larkin. Ragas was part of the National Tour and Mujica starred in two other regional productions of the show. Hairspray's star-studded cast also features Miami-native Ronald Duncan returning home to play Seaweed, Avi Hoffman as Arisco's husband Wilbur Turnblad, Avery Sommers as Motor Mouth Maybelle, Kim Cozort as Velma von Tussle, Julie Kleiner as Penny Pingleton, Celia Merendi as Amber von Tussle, and Christopher A. Kent as Corny Collins.

Hairspray is based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who served as a creative consultant on the musical comedy. With an original score by Academy Award-nominated Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, PG-rated Hairspray will have viewers young and old shimmying in their seats as they enjoy toe-tapping hits such as "It Takes Two," "Welcome To The 60's," "Without Love," "I Can Hear The Bells," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." It's hair-hopping family fun in dazzling color and style.

Scenic design is by Sean McClelland; the set coordinator is Gene Seyffer; costume design is by Ellis Tillman; lighting design is by Patrick Tennent; the sound is by Alexander Herrin; wig design is by Gerard Kelly.

Preview performances of Hairspray will be held Wednesday and Thursday, October 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. The show will open on Friday, October 14 at 8 p.m. and play through November 13. Evening performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with afternoon matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m. A special weekday matinee is scheduled on Wednesday, October 26 at 2 p.m.

Preview night tickets on the first Wednesday and Thursday are $37. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $42, and on Friday and Saturday evenings $50. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with identification. Discounts are based on availability and exclude Saturday and Sunday.

Back by popular demand to kick off the 2011-2012 Actors' Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences Season is "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." The play is based on the award-winning children's book of the same name, and adapted for the stage by the book's author, Judith Viorst, into this marvelous musical that is wacky, wild and wonderfully wise.

Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair and he is right. Things only get worse as the day goes on: his best friend bails on him, there's no dessert in his lunch bag, there's lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV! The only reasonable response is to move to Australia.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, with book and lyrics by Judith Viorst and music by Shelly Markham, will play at the Miracle Theatre from September 30 through November 19, 2011. Performances are Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Strut Your Stuff for Cancer: Local Ladies Strap On Stilettos For A Sole-Inspired Dash Around The Falls

The Falls, one of the largest open-air shopping, dining and entertainment complexes in the United States, is excited to welcome the “Strut Your Stuff For Cancer” fundraising event, presented by Baptist Health Breast Center, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event takes place on Thursday, Oct. 6, 6pm-9pm, at the Center Court in The Falls, 8888 SW 136 Street, Miami. The evening kicks off with a sassy "strut" around The Falls leading to a style trend show featuring "well-heeled" cancer survivors and the "angels" who helped them recover.

The Pink Heals Tour will be stopping at the event as part of their national tour. The Pink Heals Tour, a movement celebrating women by raising money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer, will be steering their two signature pink fire trucks towards The Falls in honor of the charitable event.

The Pink Heals Tour is led by the self-proclaimed “Guardians of the Ribbon,” a group of firefighters, police men and community leaders that travel the country to spread the “Cares Enough to Wear Pink” campaign, the fastest growing movement in the country. The campaign’s non-profit mission is to provide a national movement for the support of women across the country by wearing the color pink. The tour will be selling their commemorative Pink Heals T-shirts at the event in hopes of generating proceeds for those affected by the disease in the community. Proceeds will directly benefit Cancer Support Community Greater Miami, Sandy B. Muller Breast Cancer Foundation and La Liga Contra El Cancer. On Tuesday, Sept. 20, Visit Miami Beach unveiled its exclusive concierge and retail outlet at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Visit Miami Beach is a state-of-the-art facility offering multilingual staff along with tourist and residential amenities.
